We walk around in a world filled with little moments of clarity amongst a dense fog of existence. Tiny bits of connection, something that feels like déjà vu, arise and form echoes in our experiences.

In Echoes and Spaces, Lana Waldrep-Appl and Shawn Camp explore the feelings of the sublime that happen in those moments when you allow yourself to completely reside inside of the space you are in. These paintings feel like daydreaming, an activity that takes place primarily when doing nothing. Both artists are interested in exploring the something-ness of nothing. Camp makes paintings of air and space; imagery devoid of solid forms. That nothingness is framed through subtle geometric divisions and contradictory hints of color. Through translucence and refraction, the shimmering surfaces convey a sense of atmosphere and explore the mystery of light, matter, and space. Waldrep-Appl makes paintings of nothing spaces—places of waiting, landscapes that drone by during a commute, visual white noise, the places between places where things happen. These spaces are never flat. A gray is never just gray. Varied chromatic grays, near whites, and unanticipated pastels invite viewers to see there is more to these ignorable spaces.

Busy year

This year has been crazy with a large scale commission I’ve been working on since May (I’ll post some photos once it’s installed!) I also joined ICOSA Collective in the spring (https://www.icosacollective.com/)

Along with ICOSA shows in Los Angeles and Minneapolis I was included in the Solo Show Down exhibition at the Fort Worth Art Center. Currently, many of my new works on paper are in the St. Edwards University Flat File Exhibition. I also have work on view in the Texas State University visiting faculty show at University of Texas, Tyler.

I’ll once again be participating in the East Austin Studio Tour at my own studio this year - it’s been quite a while since I’ve hosted it here (http://east.bigmedium.org/) That runs from November 16th through the 24th. If you’re in Austin, stop by and say hello!

UNESCO Media Arts Exhibition at sxsw

Currently on view at Austin Central Library. This is an international group show including a large backlit installation and soundtrack. The show runs until April 3rd.

August Artist Residency in Iceland

Getting ready for a month-long artist residency at Creative Centre of Stöðvarfjörður in Iceland. I'll be working on new paintings, video, and sound pieces for two upcoming shows in September and October. More details to follow!
